An Islamic library café in a lane in Bang Thao where nobody pays to read. Quiet, warm, bilingual Thai and English, and built so a first-time visitor knows exactly what to expect before walking in.
Baan Phasa is not a normal café. It was opened so the neighbourhood would have somewhere to read, with a prayer room inside and free drinks for orphans and students. Explaining that in two languages, to locals and to visitors, is the whole job of the site.
We opened with a single sentence, 'Nobody here pays to read', and let the visitor step in through an arch. Then the four things a first visit comes down to: walk in, take a book, order a coffee or don't, stay as long as you like. The menu, the shelves and the directions follow, in Thai and English.
